Fires Prompt Evacuations in West, Flash Flood Warning for Southeast Coast

Hot, dry and windy conditions prompted red flag warnings and evacuations in the West as several fires are already burning, while a flash flood warning is in place for the southeast along the coast of Georgia and the Carolinas; plus, today’s weather news and forecast.

Fire danger in the West prompts evacuations

Amid hot, dry and windy conditions, The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued red flag warnings in 4 states on Friday, with at least 10 fires burning in two states, and evacuations in the Tucson area yesterday.

In California, the red flag warning affects eastern portions of California along the Nevada border. There are no red flag warnings for Southern California, however, according to Cal Fire, as of Friday morning, there are 6 fires burning in the southern part of the state. Two fires are in Ventura County, one in Riverside County, and three in San Diego County.

In Arizona, A red flag warning is also in effect for the northern half of Arizona. Even though there is not a red flag warning for the southern half of the state, authorities ordered evacuations in parts of the Tucson area on Thursday due to the nearly 4,800-acre Bighorn fire burning in the Coronado National Forest affecting the Catalina Foothills was encroaching on residential areas.

There are three other fires burning in Arizona, one in the Tonto National Forest, another in the Tortolita Mountains, and another near the North rim of Grand Canyon National Park.

In Nevada, red flag warnings are in effect throughout most of the state, where there is also a high wind warning for the central and east-central regions.

In Utah, the red flag warning covers the western, central, southern, southeastern and south-central portions of the state.

Flash flood risk across the Southeast coast

A line of thunderstorms will extend throughout Florida, and into southeastern Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning of heavy rain with the potential of flash flooding along the southeastern coast of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina on Friday.
