Courtesy of Tropical Storm Arthur, widespread thunderstorms and heavy rain will bring a significant risk of flash flooding over a large portion of the upper Midwest, Tennessee and Ohio Valleys and into parts of the South on Monday; plus today’s weather news and forecast
For the sixth year in a row, the Atlantic hurricane season started early courtesy of Tropical Storm Arthur becoming official on Saturday night off the eastern coast of Florida, with sustained winds reaching 40 miles per hour.
As of Monday morning, Arthur is off the coast of North Carolina and the weather is already having an impact for the eastern US.
Heavy rain overnight has already caused significant flooding in several areas across Illinois and as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flash flood warning for 9 states on Monday.
A warning for heavy rain and potential flash flooding has been issued but the NWS for parts of Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
The National Weather Service has forecast possible heavy snow for portions of the Sierra across northern and East Central California and into parts of Reno, Nevada.
A winter weather advisory has been issued near Lake Tahoe, for elevations above 7000 feet with predictions of snow over the passes between 1-8 inches and wind gusts up to 90 miles per hour.
The same weather system could bring thunderstorms in the surrounding areas of the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys, as well as the Sierra foothills. Officials are concerned that heavy rain could lead to some localized flooding and mudslides around recent burn areas.
